About GreenerLight
Launched in 2023 under the Universal Filmed Entertainment Group, the GreenerLight Program aims to incorporate sustainability across the filmmaking process, from script to screen. The studio—which includes Universal Pictures, Focus Features, and DreamWorks Animation—collaborates with creative and production teams and environmental experts to identify opportunities early on all the way through to release. The program also supports industry-wide sustainability initiatives, including efforts to amplify storytellers and sponsoring events to share resources and ideas.
Finding Opportunities From Script To Screen
Every project is unique – filmed in different locations with a variety of crews, filmmakers, and vendors, all tailored to the specific needs of the story. Because of this, it is necessary to take a customized approach, working closely to identify individualized sustainability opportunities. However, certain filmmaking processes do remain consistent across productions, and we’ve mapped out priority touchpoints throughout the general filmmaking process that help uncover opportunities for more sustainable practices.

Development can be a valuable time to start the collaboration with creative executives and filmmakers to identify sustainability opportunities within a film.
